The problem
Everybody has the right to enjoy top-quality drinking water. However, spring water does not always come up to scratch. Drinking water regulations take into account possible technical problems and also health risks.
The operator of the spring is responsible for maintaining proper drinking water quality.

Scale formation
Increased hardness constituents (total earth alkalis) can lead to stubborn deposits and encrustations in piping systems, fittings and equipment.
quality.

Corrosion
If water, especially soft water, contains too much free aggressive carbonic acid, this can attack metal pipes and fittings. Increased chlorine and sulphate contents also promote corrosion and attack concrete.

Clouding materials

After heavy rain, especially in the case of springs with a proportion of surface water, the supplied water often contains an increased proportion of suspended materials. On the one hand, this can cause mechanical contamination with dirt, which can lead to the sudden failure of installations and systems, and on the other, the organic impurities contained in the water can also mean microbiological contamination.

High nitrate levels
Under unfavourable conditions, increased nitrate levels in spring water can be converted into nitrites or even nitrosamines. While nitrates can lead to so-called "cyanosis" in infants, nitrosamines are also thought to be carcinogenic.

High salt levels
Water containing high salt levels is harmful to health. Such water also has strong properties that favour corrosion. When used for watering, it contaminates the ground with salts, killing off plants. Spring water containing salts is mainly found in coastal areas and on islands.

Microbial contamination
The risk of microbial contamination is particularly prevalent in catchment areas where animal faeces are found, after heavy rain or when surface water penetrates the ground water. Coliform germs in particular, such as Escherischia Coli, can cause severe illnesses of the intestinal tract.
