What is Legionnaires’ Disease? Legionnaires’
Disease is caused by aerobic, warmth-loving bacteria that occur
naturally. Particularly common (approx. 80 %) is the pathogen of the
so-called “Legionnaires’ Disease”, Legionella pneumophila, which was
only discovered as recently as 1976. In high-risk patients, this can
cause inflammation of the lungs that can be fatal in some cases.
Legionella pneumophila
Since
January 2001, infection of people by Legionella sp. has been a
reportable disease under laws governing infectious diseases.
Legionnaires’ Disease must not be confirmed in “water for human
consumption”, and is specifically listed in the new drinking water
regulations in force since 1st January 2003 in Appendix 4.1.2 under
§14.1.
At the discretion of the health authorities, water samples may be ordered from any water distribution system.
The deliberate supply of contaminated water is a criminal offence, and is punishable by a fine, or even imprisonment.
The pathogens are found particularly in:
» Warm water systems » Air-conditioning systems » Showers » Whirlpools
In
addition to the water itself, the “biofilm” found on all pipe and
container interior walls, and any form of deposits, can also serve as a
breeding ground for Legionnaires’ Disease.
As a complete supplier of water treatment systems, JUDO starts prevention of Legionnaires’ Disease at a much earlier stage:
with
preventive measures for the avoidance of deposits on the inner walls of
pipes and containers (DVGW Notice W 291) and for the restriction of
disinfection:
» Support in the consultation on water analyses and selection of piping materials to DIN 50930
»
Flushable return protection filters to DIN 1988 for the filtering out
of solid impurities, which as ventilating elements, can lead to
corrosion
» Partial softening to the 8°dH level recommended by the DVGW for the prevention of limescale deposits
»
Creation of the ideal corrosion protection layer by the dosing of DIN
DVGW-approved JUL mineral solutions in drinking water and our wide
range of corrosion-inhibitors in service water applications.
Requirements for permanent hygiene and guaranteed perfect drinking water quality:
» Isolation of old, unused piping » Pipe flushing » Permanent disinfection in accordance with DVGW W 291 » Removal of biofilms
